Case Study

Palm Treo 680 Animated Billboards.

ROLE: Animator, Designer

This dynamic animation was created as part of a high-visibility marketing campaign for the launch of the new color variants of the Palm Treo 680 smartphone. Designed for large-scale digital placements, the animation appeared on prominent highway billboards and the iconic Times Square billboards in New York City.

The animation highlights the sleek design and vibrant color options of the Palm Treo 680, aiming to catch the eye of busy commuters and city dwellers. The concept was centered around showcasing the device’s fresh, playful aesthetic while emphasizing its functionality and ease of use. Bold visuals and smooth transitions were used to draw attention to the phone’s unique colors—each of which represented a different lifestyle persona, from professional to playful.

Execution:
The animation was optimized for high-resolution screens, ensuring it remained crisp and engaging, even from a distance. The piece featured static 3D models of the phone, vibrant splashes of color, and punchy typography that called out key features, like its full QWERTY keyboard, easy email access, and multimedia capabilities. Seamless animation loops made it perfect for continuous play on high-traffic digital billboards.

Impact:
This campaign succeeded in capturing the attention of a diverse audience, enhancing brand visibility in major markets. Its vibrant, modern visuals helped position Palm as a forward-thinking player in the smartphone market, particularly in high-profile, urban settings like Times Square.

Role:
As the lead animator, I was responsible for storyboarding, visual design, and animation execution. My focus was on creating a visually arresting experience that aligned with the Palm brand and stood out in the bustling, visually competitive environments of both highway and city billboards.
